Contemporary Romance

Return
(Stratham Knights #1)
By NV Roez

Book Links:

This page-turning dark romance is gritty and raw. Evelyn’s attempt at a fresh start in life is blown out of the water when she is reunited with the three guys who betrayed her. She loved them once but hates them now. Problem is, they are the elite at her new college, the knights who are anything but noble. They look down at Evelyn, treating her like trash and inciting vicious bullies to attack her.

I loved this story. It kept me up all night reading. Evelyn’s plight is tragic, and I really felt for her, which is a testament to how well Roez brought the characters to life. It should be noted that while the series is marketed as reverse harem, there are not any real “why choose” elements in the first instalment, but I suspect this is due to the slow burn nature of the overall romance arc unfolding across the series.

After such a thrilling read with a cliff-hanger ending, I’m dying to get my hands on the next novel. I highly recommend this one for lovers of dark romance.

Heat gauge: 2/5 There is not much sex in this book, but I sense a volcanic release is coming.

Forever Moore
(Moore Family #1)
By Frankie Page

Book Links:

The tragic death of his guardians bought Jackson home from his job with a travel magazine. His return ignites the sparks with his old flame, Tilly Moore. Yet, while the chemistry is as hot as ever, clouds of doubt hang over their relationship, threating to douse the fires of passion with torrential rain. Ultimately, Jax needs to make a choice that could completely change his life.

Page has written a wonderful, sweet romance about second chances, sacrifices, and small-town politics. There were a few moments where the pace slowed, but it picked right up again with the added suspense. I did get frustrated with the main characters at times, wanting to shout at them, which proves how well the author bought them to life.

I recommend this book for all romance readers who like a little heat, but I suggest heeding the potential trigger warning.

Heat gauge: 4/5 There are lots of explicit scenes, but they are all quite vanilla.

La Familia: Dante
(The diRuggiero Mafia Family Saga #2)

By Laura Sutton

Book Links:

This was my introduction to the diRuggiero Mafia Family series even though it is the second instalment of the saga. Given that I haven’t read book 1, I feel confident in saying you can easily pick up from here and go back to the start later if you wish because this book tells Dante’s story whereas the first one is all about his older brother, Elias.

I must say, this book surprised me. When I think of mafia romance, I envision much darker, more twisted plots. The romance is quite sweet in comparison and even Dante comes across as far more decent than your typical crime lord. The pace was slower than most action-packed mafia stories I have read too. But I still loved it! Sutton has written a beautiful romance that should be respected for what it is. Do not pick this novel up with pre-conceived notions instilled from genre tropes but come at it from an unbiased perspective and you are more likely to enjoy it. I should also warn you that while the book doesn’t technically end on a cliff-hanger, it does leave a major story thread unresolved so if you are the type of reader who prefers to binge your way through a series, you might want to wait. I know I can’t wait for the next book!

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good mix of sweet romance and crime action. If you prefer your romance as dark and suspenseful as possible, this might not be to your taste.

Heat gauge: 3/5 There are several sex scenes, but I would not consider them overtly explicit, even with the super-mild BDSM references.

Paranormal Romance

Held in Contempt
(Of Magic and Contempt #2)

By Jade Thorn

Book Links:

A brilliant continuation of a great shifter romance series. I enjoyed the first instalment, but this one reeled me in with its hooks in my heart. I couldn’t put it down! So much drama, intrigue, and steamy tension. Jade Thorn is a real tease, in a good way, dangling a taste of the sensual scenes to come. I’m even more excited for book three now.

Following on from her dilemma in Beneath Contempt, Melody grows in strength and character. She also reveals more of her horrid past. It was heart-warming to see the guys that rally around her, along with the faculty staff who offer their support. Having fallen in love with all of these wonderful characters, I definitely needed the tissue box when tragedy stuck.

I highly recommend this book and the series to all PNR readers, especially if you like a variety of shifters.

Heat gauge: 3/5 Thing heat up a little more in book 2 and the sexual tension is palpable. There is even a taste of m/m action.
